Libraries: Milwaukie, Estacada, and Multnomah County Central

Once upon a time we read an article about what they called "cozy" libraries.

https://traveloregon.com/things-to-do/trip-ideas/family-fun/cozy-libraries-in-oregon/

We had already visited the Tualatin Public Library and seen the mastodon bones there.

https://sporktogo.blogspot.com/2017/10/tualatin-river-greenway-trail.html

Some of the libraries mentioned sounded like great things for their community, but not necessarily something we would make a trip for.

However, there were a few we were able to work in.

For example, the Ledding Library in Milwaukie is quite close to Enchanté Chocolatier and the City Hall Sculpture Garden

While there are lots of cool things in that part of town, I suspect the biggest influence on this library is the presence of Dark Horse Comics.

The mural in the teen room shows a variety of superheroes and villains.

None of them are specifically recognizable (I suspect due to pesky trademark issues) but some of them may seem familiar nonetheless.

We were able to visit a long time ago, but wanted to make it to Estacada Public Library for the tiles and labyrinth before writing either library up.

I admit I was not impressed by the labyrinth. Currently, labyrinths are used more for meditation exercises than hiding a Minotaur, which I did know.

To facilitate concentration, you really have to focus on the lines to see the path.

The tiles are much easier to see, and interesting to look at.

There is a guide in case you cannot immediately recognize the Northwest flora.

Local flowers by a local artist makes this a nice touch of community spirit. The labyrinth is also by a local artist.

I loved this quilt.

The library is nestled into Wade Creek Park, so you have picnic areas, playground equipment, and water nearby.

We were glad to have finally made it to both of our intended destinations, but in between we discovered the new Beverly Cleary Children's Room at Multnomah County Central Library.

There were many nice updates with the refurbishing, but the children's area was especially charming. We appreciate the choice to honor Beverly Cleary, an important figure in many of childhoods.

It is easy to find books, and there are many fun places to sit and curl up with one.

There are also activities and fun things to look at for children who might not be quite ready to read on their own.

Starting that love of reading early and exposing children to many books is helpful for their development. The layout of this room seems to take that to heart.

COVID: Everything except the labyrinth is indoors. It is best to mask. I will say that none of the libraries were too crowded when we were there, but that can fluctuate rapidly.

Accessibility: That is one area where they all do pretty well. The Central Library does still have the grand steps at the entrance, but there is a ramp right there as well.

The other two are much newer buildings and everything is flat and modern.

We love libraries anyway; these are just some with some extra flair.

Delicious, Affordable Burgers: Joe's and Bumpur

A few months back there were conversations about how hamburgers were getting too expensive, especially in relation to Five Guys.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/five-guys-customers-prices-control-040806658.html

I know that prices vary by location, I know that prices in general have gone up, and I am not sure that the Five Guys prices are that unreasonable, especially because I remember the "little" fries not being that little.

Regardless, I have been to two other places that I am going to recommend, one of which is pretty reasonably priced, and the other is even better.

Joe's Burgers has locations in Bridgeport Village and Murrayhill, as well as another in Kirkland, Washington. My photos are from the Murrayhill location.

Their most expensive burger is the double Black & Blue Burger, which at $11.00 (the single is $9.75) comes with bacon, bleu cheese crumbles, and guacamole (among other things). A single, regular Joe's Burger is $7.25.

That is still an adult burger. Children can get a Little Joe's Meal for $7.00, where a plain burger or four other entree options come with fries and a drink.

Other meal options include hot dogs, sandwiches, or baskets (fish, chicken, or chili sweet potato fries). Once more, the most expensive item is $11.00, in this case, the fish basket.

Sides include range from a regular order of Fries at $3.75 to Chili Cheese Fries at $5.20. In between there are options for Sweet Potato Fries, Tots, and Onion Rings.

We did not have everything on the menu, but everything we had was pretty good.

Bumpur Burger doesn't have quite as wide a selection of menu offerings, but the prices can't be beat.

Of course, they have lower overhead, and a radical philosophy.

While their regular location is on SW 229th, we have been visiting them at the Aloha Community Farmer's Market. When the market is open, they are there, unless the Dead are in town. (Not a joke.)

A quarter-pound hamburger is $4.50, the cheeseburger is $5.00, and two patties (the 50/50 Burger) is $7.00. That is still nothing compared to the The People's Meal:

For $12.00 you get the 50/50 Burger, Fries, Fry Sauce (or ketchup), Kool-Aid, and a brownie. (Previously it was treats from Jelana's, so with my meal it was a snickerdoodle.)

It is a lot of food. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture when I had it, but I did save the sticker.

Last time, we each got a cheeseburger and shared an order of fries and fry sauce.

They are very popular. Going to the market early is wise, because they do sometimes run out of the patties.

I think part of my sister's love for them is that they use Bread and Butter instead of Dill pickles.

They have added a Vegie burger, and you can get just a People's Meal in training, which means that there is only one patty. That is $10.00.

COVID: Joe's does have outside seating, and offers delivery. Bumpur is all outside.

Accessibility: Mobility devices should fit at the tables at Joe's, though I can imagine it being stressful if the restaurant was crowded.

With Bumpur, I can see the possibility of difficulty with ordering at the window, since they are up in a truck. However, they are so nice that I do not doubt that they would come out and make it work.
